Seeking Knowledge: Manners of a Student in Islam
The very first word revealed to the Prophet ﷺ was “Iqra”, meaning “Read”. From the beginning, Islam placed learning at the heart of faith. But seeking knowledge is not only about collecting information. It is a journey with its own manners, and those manners shape who we become.
Why Knowledge Matters
The Qur’an draws a clear contrast between those who know and those who do not:
هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِينَ يَعْلَمُونَ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ
“Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” (Surah az-Zumar, 39:9)
The Prophet ﷺ also said that whoever travels a path seeking knowledge, Allah makes easy for him a path to Paradise (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2699). Every step taken for the sake of learning, whether to a classroom, a teacher or a book, carries that promise.
Manners of the Student
1. Sincerity
Begin by correcting the intention. We learn to please Allah, to remove ignorance from ourselves and to benefit others, not to show off or win arguments. A sincere intention can be renewed again and again, even in the middle of a lesson.
2. Humility
Knowledge grows in a humble heart, as water gathers in low ground. Respect your teachers, listen carefully and be ready to say “I do not know”. A student who thinks he already knows enough has closed the door to learning.
3. Patience
Understanding rarely comes at once. Some lessons need to be heard several times and some ideas take years to settle. Be patient with the subject, with your teacher and with yourself.
4. Putting Knowledge into Practice
Knowledge that is not acted upon becomes a burden. Even a small lesson, such as a single du’a, a single adab or a single ruling, should be applied as soon as it is understood. This is how learning turns into character.
5. Asking Allah for Increase
The Qur’an teaches us a short and beautiful prayer for every student:
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” (Surah Ṭā Hā, 20:114)
For Every Student, at Any Age
You do not need to be young, or enrolled in a long course, to begin. A few minutes of learning each day, taken from a trusted teacher or a reliable book, is a real step on this path. May Allah grant us beneficial knowledge, the humility to carry it and the ability to act upon it.
